Blackberries an antioxidant powerhouse

Blackberries an antioxidant powerhouse

CONCORD, Mass. (UPI) -- U.S. and Norwegian researchers, who have compiled the total concentration of antioxidants in 1,000 foods and beverages say blackberries top the list.

The five foods and beverages with highest antioxidant levels were: 1 cup of blackberries, 8 ounces of Welch's 100 percent Grape Juice, 1 cup of Ocean Mist artichoke hearts, 1 ounce of walnuts and 1 cup of sliced strawberries, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

These items ranked higher than blueberries, red wine, chocolate, coffee and tea -- often touted for their high antioxidant capacity, according to the researchers at the University of Oslo, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and the University of Minnesota.

The researchers used the FRAP -- ferric reducing ability of plasma -- assay method to measure and compile the expanded listing of total concentration of antioxidants for 1,113 foods and beverages.

"Many high-antioxidant fruits and vegetables can be identified by their deep, dark coloring," said nutrition consultant Carla McGill.
